Good morning, PTBO! Folk Fest rolled in with fiddles and banjos all over town and then Kim Mitchell showed up blasting Patio Lanterns like it was the law. Peterborough pretty much turned into one big jukebox this weekend.

In today’s PTBO Brief:

  • 🥍 Lakers move onto MSL finals

  • 😊 PTBO Councillors take a road trip

  • 😸Whiskers of the week

Let's get to it.

QUICK BITS

🥍 Lakers Pull Off Miracle Comeback

Down 3–2 in the series. Down 5–2 in Games 6 and 7. But the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers refused to die, storming back to beat Brooklin 8–7 in overtime Thursday at the Memorial Centre.

Mike Robinson buried the winner with 2:56 left in OT, capping a wild rally that had the crowd of 2,859 shaking the rafters. Holden Cattoni tied it late on a power play, and Nick Rose/Drew Hutchison held strong in net to seal the deal.

The Lakers now head into Game 2 of the MSL Finals down 1–0, with the series shifting back to the Mem Centre Tuesday night. Tickets on sale Tuesday morning.

🏘️ Peterborough Councillors Checking Out Tiny Homes

Councillors Alex Bierk and Keith Riel are off to Fredericton on Aug. 21 to see the 12 Neighbours community up close. It’s a big little project — nearly 100 tiny homes, plus a café, bakery, and training programs — all meant to give people dealing with homelessness a shot at stability and skills.

Mayor Jeff Leal pushed for the trip, saying Peterborough needs new ideas after council voted to end One City’s overnight shelter funding in 2026. Bierk says the model might not fit everyone here, but it could help open up space in shelters and create more “flow-through” housing for people ready to take the next step.

THE BORO BUSINESS

🚛 Landfill Fees Could Sting Vinnies: Vinnies thrift shops in Peterborough and Lakefield say new landfill rules set for 2026 could cost them up to $100,000 a year. For years the charity’s been exempt from tipping fees when tossing unusable donations, but that break is ending. With dump rates at $260 a ton, general manager Angela Oran says it’s a “major financial hit” that could drain resources from Vinnies’ food banks — including the city’s largest.

Right now about half of what comes through their donation doors can’t be resold, and illegal dumping of broken furniture and mattresses just makes it worse. City and county leaders argue the landfill can’t afford special exemptions anymore, but Mayor Jeff Leal says council will revisit Vinnies’ concerns at the next waste management meeting in September.

🛒 Sobeys Towerhill Shows Off Fresh New Look: After six months of renos, Sobeys on Towerhill Road threw open its doors Thursday with a big grand reopening. Franchisee John Armstrong and his family say the store’s been completely gutted and rebuilt — from new floors and shelving to a modernized deli, hot food counter, and even sushi chefs now on site.

The first 500 shoppers scored $10 gift cards, plus giveaways and samplings filled the aisles. Sobeys also marked the day with a $2,000 donation to Hospice Peterborough. Armstrong says the facelift means more space, more local products on the shelves, and a better “market feel” for everyday shopping.
